  Ohio's Covered Bridges

Having personally photographed, hunted, recorded and researched all known 147 existing, (or recently defunct) covered bridges in Ohio, which he has found in each county, photographer Mark Berger possesses the definitive collection. He soon plans to publish a book of these bridges.

The Spain Creek Covered Bridge

The Spain Creek Covered Bridge located in Union County was built in 1870. As of 3 May 1992 the Spain was rebuilt to compensate for heavier loads. The Spain is 65 feet long, the shortest of the four Partridge truss bridges. The exterior has a tin roof, and gray painted siding with long windows extending the length of the bridge protected by tin covered eaves. Spain Creek is a tributary of Big Darby Creek and has a 50 foot normal bed width at the bridge site.

The Spain Creek covered Bridge is unusual because it is the shortest Partridge truss, but also it is because it only has three wooden members in the "X" as opposed to the normal five, but maintains the steel tie rods diagonally and vertically. The floor has crosswise floor planking interfaced with two lengthwise runners.

On 4 November 1999 this photographer found the Spain Creek Covered Bridge will be refurbished with a new roof and window eaves. The roof and eaves will be constructed with cedar shake. At this time, the color has not yet been determined nor are all of the total renovation costs The Spain Creek Covered Bridge is well maintained and open to local traffic.

Directions: Allen Township. From Marysville, west on SR 245, seven miles, turn Right on CR 163 (Crotty Road).
